EARLY LIFE
Charles Spencer Chaplin was presented to this world on April 16 1889 in London, England by Charles and Hannah Chaplin, both performers. However, like in many stories, Charlie's childhood was a rough start to his life with the event of his father (who was also a drinker) leaving his mother, Charlie's half brother Sydney, and Charlie in order to work in New York City soon after his birth. His father later died as a result of alcohol abuse when Charlie was only twelve.
Charlie's mother's singing career (under the stage name of Lily Harley) did not lead to success. While performing, her voice broke. Luckily, Charlie, at five years of age, had been there to save the day. The stage manager had heard Charlie sing before, and because of this, Charlie was put on stage. He was a hit with the audience! Unfortunately, being a hit with the audience didn't revive his mother's career. Hannah did not continue to sing anymore and being out of her job caused the family's funds to drop. The loss of funds led to the family living in many charity homes.
